You don’t have to spend much time on a motorcycle to appreciate the advantages of a quality phone mount. As much as you might savor escaping from the trappings your everyday existence, it’s just super handy to have your device’s navigation, music and communication capabilities in easy sight and reach.

At the same time, one of the biggest hangups is keeping that phone alive, especially with GPS draining its life force like some sort of digital Baron Harkonnen. Yes, you can charge it via a cable, and modern bikes offer ports for doing so, but it’s always a bit clunky — and not always reliable. Until now.

Once the unit is properly installed on your bike, charging your phone will be as simple as dropping it onto the mount, no messy cables required.

Because one of our favorite brands, Peak Design, is rolling out the world’s first Qi2 wireless charging moto mounts — through its tried-and-true fundraising channel, Kickstarter — and they sure look like game changers.

A track record of mobile mounting excellence

After all, the folks at Peak Design really don’t introduce new products unless they are certain they’ve nailed the execution. When the brand best known for camera bags, straps, clips and tripods launched its Mobile ecosystem in 2020, the Everyday Case and its family of accessories proved to be damn near perfect, even claiming a spot in our own GP100 with the fantastic Out Front Bike Mount.

(What won us over is how smoothly everything works. Thanks to Neodymium magnets, you simply set the cased phone onto the mount to secure it, then tap one of the subtle buttons on the underside to release it. The system is so robust, you can lift up your whole bike with the phone.)

Another product in that revolutionary line? The original Motorcycle Bar Mount, which I absolutely love. I’ve tried a number of other options over the years and none has proven as sturdy, shock-absorbent and easy to use as PD’s stainless steel and machined/anodized aluminum offering.

The future of phone charging, now on your motorcycle

That’s a big reason I’m so excited about this new Kickstarter campaign, Peak Design’s 12th. Not only has the brand expanded the types of moto mounts it offers — complementing the existing Bar, Ball and Stem Mounts with a Brake/Clutch Mount and a Mirror Mount — but also the already world-class vibration-dampening has gotten better.

The new units boast six precision-tuned silicone dampeners between an upper- and lower-damper plate. This second generation also features a fully-adjustable ballhead, enabling you to position your phone’s screen at just the right angle for on-road navigation.

While Peak Design is offering non-charging V2 mounts for $79, the big news here is Qi2 charging capability, available for the first time on a motorcycle mount. The wireless system offers greater charging efficiency for better battery health and charging speeds that are two times faster from 5 watts to 15 watts.

While it’ll take a bit of DIY skill to get one of these mounts properly secured and power-ported on your bike — PD provides thorough instructions — once it is installed, charging your phone will be as simple as dropping it onto the mount, no messy cables required.

It is worth noting that in order to reach this veritable Valhalla of moto mounting and charging, a few other products are required: namely, a recent-gen phone that supports Qi2 wireless charging; the aforementioned Everyday Case (available for $50 for Apple, Samsung and Pixel phones) or a $30 Universal Adapter; and a $10 USB-C Cable.

Four of the five charging models themselves cost $120 for Kickstarter backers, with the Ball Mount Adapter costing $99. (Those prices will rise by $40 and $21, respectively, when the products depart Kickstarter next Tuesday and migrate to Peak Design’s own site.)

Yes, all those elements can add up. But as far as we’re concerned, the total is still a relatively small price to pay for what looks to be the best line of moto mounts ever made — with a charging setup that’ll keep your GPS system from running out of juice, and your bike from getting lost in some endless, Arrakis-like desert wasteland.
