With a history dating back to the early 1900s, Red Wing counts plenty of icons as part of its Heritage catalog. But few carry the label more proudly and handsomely than the Iron Ranger, which Red Wing just released in a dark green colorway for the very first time.

History of the Iron Ranger

The Iron Ranger’s name is part of its legacy. Red Wing originally designed the boot for the iron miners of Minnesotaโ€™s Mesabi Iron Range. As such, the boot perfectly embodies the manufacturer’s reputation practicality, thanks in large part to in its signature attributes over other Red Wing boots.

Built by hand on the company’s No. 8 last, the Iron Ranger features a double-layered toe cap for increased durability. It also boasts a more conventional sole, compared to something like rubber-laden Red Wing Classic Moc, as well as steel shank for extra stability.

Add to that its Goodyear welt and Puritan triple-stitch construction and you have a versatile boot that takes a while to break-in but rewards wearers with a lifetime of comfort and support. No wonder it’s made its way into the wardrobes of countless celebrities and blue-collar workers, alike.

Working ahead

Its longstanding legacy hasn’t stopped Red Wing from tinkering with the Iron Ranger over the years. And while some heritage products are better left untouched, these boots benefit from the company’s inventiveness.

That’s because fans of the Iron Ranger have the option to pick up a pair in Alpine Portage, a dark-green colorway that debuted on last year’s Classic Moc to much fanfare.

Like that boot, the new variant of the Iron Ranger comes with brass hardware that include its famously fast speed hooks. However, its black stitching offers a more understated look than the dual-tone aesthetic of last year’s release, staying true to the old-timey vibe of the Iron Ranger.

In any case, the fall-ready colorway offers a stand-out alternative to finishes like the patina-friendly Copper Rough & Tough, which is just as iconic as the boot itself but common among its legion of wearers.

Clocking in at $370, the Iron Ranger in Alpine Portage comes with a small but notable $20 price bump over the standard version of the boot. Similar to the Slate colorway, it’s only available in regular D width.
