The history of dive watches is filled with impressive milestones, from Blancpain’s invention of the modern diver in 1953 to Omega’s Ultra Deep prototype accompanying the DSV Limiting Factor submersible’s record-breaking dive down 10,935m to the deepest point of the Mariana Trench in 2019.

But one record that doesn’t get talked about as much is the one set by the relatively obscure Swiss brand Ollech & Wajs in 1964. That year, the small company beat big brands like Rolex and Omega to the punch by releasing the first-ever dive watch with a certified depth rating of 1,000m.

That watch, produced in partnership with casemaker Jenny Watches, is known as the Caribbean 1000 or, more commonly among vintage collectors, the “Jenny Caribbean.”

The modern incarnation of Ollech & Wajs currently produces a contemporary version of the watch called the OW C-1000 MkII, but now the brand has unveiled a special 60th-anniversary version that’s more faithful to the original 1960s design.

Fang Gang

The distinguishing feature of the original Jenny Caribbean was the steel monobloc case that ensured the then-unheard-of 1,000m depth rating. The new OW C-1000 A does not use a monobloc case, as modern advancements don’t require such a case โ€” one in which the caseback doesn’t open and the movement is loaded from the dial side โ€” to receive four-figure depth ratings.

Otherwise, the watch does a pretty good job of recreating its 60-year-old ancestor’s look.

Most prominent in terms of retro vibes is the shape of the case. The new diver recreates the original’s iconic sharp triangular lugs, affectionately known as “vampire fangs” among vintage enthusiasts.

The 60th-anniversary Caribbean 1000 features a number of period-correct design cues, most notably the “vampire fang” lugs.

The tapered handset of the original has also been recreated here, and the 12-hour bezel โ€” with its distinctive decompression markings for the first 20 minutes โ€” is also a carryover from the first incarnation of the Jenny Caribbean.

The modern C-1000 MkII lacks all of these design traits, meaning the new reference is the one you should get if you’re really looking to capture those vintage Caribbean 1000 vibes.

The movement powering the anniversary watch is also interesting. While most examples are powered by the Soprod Newton Cal. P092 automatic, the same engine found in the modern version of the diver, the first 56 examples sold will instead run on the ETA Cal. 2824-2.

These 56 movements represent the last of OW’s remaining stock of the venerable Swiss automatic movement, as ETA no longer sells its movements to third parties, and the number available also coincidentally aligns with the year of Ollech & Wajs’s founding in 1956.

The 15.8mm case thickness isn’t exactly slim, but it’s to be expected for a watch with a 1,000m depth rating.

Pricing and Availability

The 60th-anniversary edition of the Caribbean 1000 is priced at 1,856 CHF ($2,106) and is sold on a cadmium yellow nylon RAF-style strap inspired by the wet suits worn by the original testers of the Caribbean 1000 in the 1960s. You can also purchase a heritage-inspired stainless steel mesh bracelet for an additional 126 CHF (~$143).

The 56 ETA-powered versions of the watch will be individually numbered and must be reserved in advance, which you can do so by emailing [email protected] with your name and contact info. The OW C-1000 A will then go on sale at the end of August, with deliveries expected to commence in October.
