Is Team USA’s Olympic Podium Kit Inspired by Gorpcore?

A curious design detail hints that the pinnacle of sportswear might’ve taken a page from the outdoor gear world.

American Olympic athletes are showered with so much merch and custom gear, both before and during the games, that I wonder how they pack for it.

Part of the volume stems from brands supplying dedicated outfits for every possible moment an athlete might encounter. But while the opening ceremony fashion and the technical event uniforms might occupy the most cultural headspace, what Olympic champions wear at the podium while the anthems play and medals are handed out – this year on custom Louis Vuitton trays no less – might garner the most undivided attention of all.

That’s why it should be a surprise to no one that Nike, a brand that knows a thing or two about sports marketing, has, in recent decades, made a concerted effort to be the outfitter of record for American medal winners.

At first glance, the company’s podium-specific outfits for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris look like a modern dark blue tracksuit with tasteful patriotic branding that makes the stuff worn by greats like Carl Lewis in the 90s feel like a parody.

Examples of technical pants with integrated belts are common in the outdoor world, including in versions made by Nike. But seeing the feature make its way to such a high-profile piece designed for Olympians still feels strange.

But at least one unique feature on the pants caught our attention and likely won’t appear much on TV: an integrated, technical-looking belt and buckle.

This is a moment where I’ll acknowledge that calling attention to the appearance of a belt on a pair of pants might seem asinine. In some ways, it is if you ignore the broader context. That said, most people would expect to see an elastic waistband or drawstring on a pair of warm-up / cool-down pants like these.

It’s also true that outdoor outfitters like The North FacePatagonia and countless others have offered technical pants with integrated belts for years. Nike even sells a few pairs under the ACGISPA and Tech Line sub-labels, although the belt design here does look quite different from Nike’s other takes.

So what’s the story here?

The likely answer is that designers felt pants intended for a momentous occasion on the level of winning an Olympic Medal warranted a bit of design distinction. To that point, these pants do look a lot like a hybrid between athletic wear and traditional dress pants, which makes sense given they’re meant for a formal moment of athletic achievement.

But it’s also not a stretch to think that the Gorpcore trend, which, as Wikipedia summarizes, is a term used to describe when “outerwear typically designed for outdoor recreation is worn as streetwear,” might’ve finally conquered the most mainstream cultural touchstones on earth.

Whatever the reasoning, the bottom line is that there’s more to these pants than initially meets the eye, and if you like the vibes, they’re available for sale from Nike directly for a premium price. If you do splurge for them, don’t let people catch you loosening that waistband after a heavy brunch though.
