It really wasn’t all that long ago, maybe a few decades at most, that bourbon was considered an American phenomenon, with other whiskeys preferred globally.

Of course, bourbon must still be made in America, as the laws regulating its existence dictate, but it can be consumed all around the world. And it is, in shockingly high numbers.

Thanks to the bourbon boom of the 21st century, bourbon demand has skyrocketed not only here in the U.S. but around the world, too. So much so, in fact, that the bestselling world whiskey brand in 2023 was not from Japan, Ireland or Canada, but rather a brand from a Kentucky distillery best known for producing cheap bourbon.

Jim Beam is the top world whiskey brand

That’s right. Good old Jim Beam, whose flagship bourbon retails for less than $20 per 750ml bottle, is the best-selling world whiskey brand in the world according to The Spirit Business’s Brand Champions Report for 2024.

What exactly is a world whiskey? According to The Spirits Business’s categorization, these are whiskeys produced in the U.S., Canada, Japan and Ireland. Scotch whisky from Scotland and Indian whisky each have their own separate categories.

Back to Beam. The Suntory-owned brand sold an impressive 17 million 9-liter cases in 2023, an increase of 2.7 percent over the previous year. The second bestseller among world whiskeys was Jack Daniel’s with 14.3 million, followed by Ireland’s Jameson with 10.2 million cases sold.

Among bourbons, Evan Williams fared second-best, but lags far behind Jim Beam with just 3.1 million cases sold, showing Beam’s utter dominance on the global scale. Maker’s Mark was the third best-selling bourbon with 3 million cases.

Finally, if we were to group all three whiskey categories together โ€”ย Scotch, Indian and World Whiskeys โ€”ย Beam’s bourbon comes up a bit short from taking the overall title.

Among all brands of the brown stuff worldwide, Beam comes in sixth place directly behind the top Scotch brand, Johnnie Walker. Indian whiskies then claim the top four spots, led by McDowell’s Whisky in first place with an impressive 31.4 million cases sold.

Still, Beam’s accomplishment as not only the world’s best-selling bourbon (by far) but the best-selling whiskey from anywhere besides Scotland or India deserves praise, and I’d say it’s worth dropping 20 bucks on a bottle to celebrate.
