Samsung has officially broken the first big smartphone news of the year — it unveiled its new flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S24 series, at today’s Unpacked event. Like in previous years, the new series consists of three different models: the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus and the high-end Galaxy S24 Ultra.
At first glance, all three smartphones look similar to last year’s Galaxy S23 counterparts. In fact, they’re nearly identical. Samsung gave each model the usual iterative updates, of course. They’re the first Galaxy smartphones with a titanium frame. Each model has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, which is the most powerful processor ever put in a Galaxy smartphone. And all three have the “brightest Galaxy display ever” (2,600 nit peak brightness) and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate display (which was previously just on the Ultra).
But the biggest upgrade has to do with AI.
What is Galaxy AI?
With the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung is introducing Galaxy AI — it’s a suite of AI-powered features that aim to make communicating on your Galaxy S24 device way easier. It also allows the device to learn your preferences and habits over time, like your style of editing photos or your tone when you send messages, and it can streamline those tasks.
Honestly, there are a ton of AI-powered features that Samsung is bringing to all its Galaxy S24 series devices, but here are a few standouts:
- Live Translate: You can have a phone call with somebody who speaks a different language and the Galaxy S24 will translation it in realtime so that you can both understand.
- Chat Assist: When messaging somebody in any app, the Galaxy S24 can recommend different “conversational tones” to make sure that you sound as professional (when talking to a coworker) or as casual (when talking to friends) as you intended.
- Interpreter: The Galaxy S24 will instantly translate live conversations in a split-screen view so that two people speaking different languages can read a text transcription of what the other person is saying.
- Transcript Assist: The S24 will transcribe voice recordings, even when there are multiple speakers, for you and will even summarize and translate what was said.
- Circle to Search: This gesture-driven feature works with Google, allowing you to search for things (like images and text) just by circling, highlighting or tapping on your Galaxy S24’s screen.
