A Legendary Pocket Knife Brand Just Launched the Grilling Set of the Summer

Opinel found a way to turn a pocket knife into a spatula.

Opinel’s iconic wood-handled folding knives are more than mere blades. They’re a platform.

While the brand’s classic folders are already considered the ultimate gentleman’s EDC knives and a must-have at picnics, they’re even more indispensable when turned into culinary multi-tools.

We’ve seen this most notably in the case of the Opinel No. 8 Picnic+, which includes stainless steel knife and spoon attachments that are secured to the knife handle via the Virobloc safety ring lock.

Now, the French brand has come out with an even more useful outdoor cooking and food prep setup in the form of the Opinel Grilling Set.

Turn Your Knife Into a Spatula

Like the Picnic+, the Opinel Grilling Set makes use of the knife’s built-in Virobloc system to transform it into another tool. In this case, we’re looking at the larger No. 12B blade as opposed to the No. 8, and for the attachment, Opinel includes a stainless steel “Spatula+.”

With the Spatula+ insert attached, the spatula and handle measure 15 ¾ inches long, making this a full-sized grilling utensil. The knife also boasts a 6.25-inch blade for slicing and dicing, and the base of the handle has a built-in bottle opener for popping open beers.

There Are Tongs, Too. Sadly, They Don’t Attach

The Grilling Set also includes a pair of grilling tongs. These do not attach to the knife, but they are made of stainless steel with a stonewashed finish and include a grill lift built into the handle side to aid in cleaning out spent coals.

The tongs and the spatula are both dishwasher-safe, so they should be pretty easy to take of. The knife, obviously, should not go in the dishwasher. You should care for it like you would any pocket knife with a wooden handle.

The Kit Is All or Nothing

Opinel will not sell you the tongs or the spatula attachment separately — they’re only available altogether as a kit. So if you were thinking you could pick up a spatula insert for the Opinel knife you already own, you’re out of luck.

Plus, the spatula attachment will only work with the No. 12B knife that’s included in the set anyway. This is a special version of the Opinel No. 12 that’s been engineered to accept this spatula — the attachment won’t fit on a standard No. 12 or any other Opinel knife.
