Herman Miller has released a new version of the most iconic lounge chair ever. A so-called โBamboo Leather Alternativeโ upholstery option joins a list of available materials that already includes four types of leather, mohair, and two fabric options.
For now, the new material is available in three classic color options of black, ivory and russet.
According to Herman Miller, the upholstery reduces the carbon footprint of the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman by up to 35 percent while looking very similar, although slightly less textured than classic versions made with animal leather.
Beyond the new material’s obvious environmental and animal welfare benefits, there’s a more tangible perk potential buyers can appreciate: it’s $500 cheaper than the default All Grain leather option.
What’s unknown is how the material feels compared to traditional leather. The same goes for how the material might age or patina. We’d assume that Herman Miller would have never considered adding it to the most famous piece of furniture in the brand’s portfolio though without extensive testing and vetting.
According to the retailer, you can purchase this option right now via Herman Miller’s site, but the chair won’t ship for 12 weeks.
